Reading
As a school we teach phonic and initial reading skills through a scheme called “Read Write Inc”
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.
The children:
- learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letters/letter groups using simple picture prompts – see below
- learn to read words using Fred talk and sound blending
- read from a range of storybooks and non-fictions books matched to their phonic knowledge
- work well with partners
- develop comprehension skills in stories by answering ‘Find It’ and ‘Prove It’ discussion questions
Fred Talk
We use pure sounds (‘m’ not’ muh’,’s’ not ‘suh’, etc.) so that your child will be able to blend the sounds into words more easily. At school we use a puppet called Fred who is an expert on sounding out words! we call it, ‘Fred Talk’. E.g. m-o-p, c-a-t, m-a-n, sh-o-p, b-l-a-ck.The following video is an example of blending sounds with Fred. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEzfpod5w_QThe children are taught the sounds in 3 sets.Step 1:Set 1 Sounds are taught in the following order together with rhymes to help children form the letters correctly and instantly recognise sounds ready for blending.

Nonsense words (Alien words)
As well as learning to read and blend real words children will have plenty of opportunities to apply their sound recognition skills on reading ‘Nonsense words’. These words will also feature heavily in the Year One Phonics Screening check in the summer term. Click here for further information on the Screening check.

RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found here
We also use action words with the children when they enter reception to help build up more quickly a bank of sight vocabulary of frequently used words

Development of More Complex Reading Skills
In addition to the teaching of phonics we further develop children’s reading skills with taught reading lessons which focus on five key areas of “D E R I C” .
DERIC stands for:
D: Decoding words
E: Explaining new vocabulary
R: Retrieving infomation
I: Interpreting infomation
C: Choice (thinking about the choices made by the author/director/artist)
Through our teaching of Phonics and Reading, we aim to develop
- Excellent phonic knowledge and skills.
- Fluency and accuracy in reading across a wide range of contexts throughout the curriculum.

As children progress through school there are key milestones they are judged against and they are linked to age related expectations at these points in time. We have three key milestone points across the school. we aim for children to achieve. Milestone 1 is expected standard by the end of Year 2, Milestone 2 is the expected standard by the end of Year 4 and Milestone 3 is the expected standard by the end of Year 6.
